There is no doubt that the Covid-19 crisis has had a major or severe impact on two-thirds of small businesses in the Newry Mourne and Down Council area and over a third of business owners have experienced major or severe mental health problems as a result.
These are the headline findings of a Down Business Centre survey, which focussed on the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the local self-employed sector.
So, Down Business Centre decided to do something about it.
Down Business Virtual Support Network has been formed to provide virtual support and connections for self-employed and remote working members of the local business community. An opportunity to meet with likeminded people for encouragement, motivation and to learn new skills. To facilitate and signpost resources for support to achieve personal and professional goals while nurturing self-care and wellbeing.
Commenting on the Centre’s plans, Janice McDonald, Manager of Down Business Centre, said that the impact of Covid-19 had left the business community feeling very vulnerable and isolated.
“Now more than ever there is a need for supportive networks to help navigate the way ahead,” said Mrs McDonald. “Our survey highlighted 62% of our self-employed experienced a lack of motivation and 56% are suffering from stress. Lockdowns, uncertainty and worry have exacerbated feelings of isolation and vulnerability so we feel we have a moral duty to help if we can.”
